Description
This term refers to the front wheel hub assembly, a key component in a vehicle’s wheel-end system. It is commonly encountered in automotive parts catalogs, service manuals, and bill-of-materials (BOM) documents.
What it is
The hub assembly is the unit that mounts the wheel to the vehicle and allows it to rotate. On the front axle, it typically integrates several functions into a single pre-assembled component:
- Hub body — the rotating member to which the wheel and brake disc (or drum) are bolted.
- Bearing(s) — tapered roller bearings (older designs) or a sealed cartridge bearing unit (modern designs) that let the hub spin with minimal friction.
- Wheel studs / bolts — pressed into the hub flange to secure the wheel with lug nuts.
- Seals — retain grease and exclude water, dust, and road debris.
- ABS sensor or tone ring (on equipped vehicles) — provides wheel-speed data to the ABS/ESC system.
Function
The hub assembly carries the vehicle’s vertical load at the front corner, transmits driving and braking torque, and maintains correct wheel alignment geometry. It must withstand combined radial, axial, and thrust loads while keeping the wheel spinning smoothly and true.
